For the first time ever, the Muhlenberg wrestling team won the Petrofes Invitational.
The Mules scored 147.5 points in the two-day tournament, finishing 9.5 points ahead of second-place Messiah. Muhlenberg has been coming to the Petrofes every season but three since 1981 and had never placed higher than second (1993).
No Mules won their brackets, but all 10 placewinners won at least one bout on the second day of competition.Â
Seniors
Greg Baum (141) and
Luca Colestock (197) placed second in their brackets. Baum cut an 8-1 deficit to 8-6 in his title bout against a nationally ranked Messiah opponent but was reversed late and fell, 11-6. Colestock advanced to the final with a major decision but had to bow out due to injury early in the first period.
Sophomore
Joey Lamparelli and freshman
Frank DiEsso combined for an all-Muhlenberg consolation final at 125, with Lamparelli winning by forfeit. Lamaprelli went 6-1 on the weekend to improve to 11-3 on the season, while DiEsso (10-2 overall) went 5-1 in contested bouts.
Freshman
Shane Trattner reached the consolation final at 165, while sophomore
Ricky Caamano (133) and freshmen
Chris Sockler (149) and
Anson Dewar (157) each placed fifth.
