Mikah Christian led the team with 71 receiving yards while
Mitch Carsley added a touchdown pass and
Danial Shelton sparked the River Hawks with a 75-yard touchdown return off a blocked field goal, but the Susquehanna University Football team dropped a 21-18 decision to Moravian College after a late touchdown Saturday afternoon at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field in Selinsgrove.
The Greyhounds (4-2 Overall, 3-2 Landmark) were able to get on the scoreboard first after a 28-yard fumble recovery to take an early 7-0 lead.
The River Hawks (3-3, 2-3) inched closer to the lead after a field goal by
Elijah Hoffman with 3:50 remaining in the first quarter and briefly took the lead halfway through the second quarter when
Michael Ruisch connected with Carsley on a 25-yard touchdown pass.
Leading 9-7, the River Hawks surrendered a touchdown late in the second quarter to give the lead right back before a 68-yard drive allowed Hoffman to kick a 26-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the half to go into the locker room trailing 14-12.
The third quarter consisted of three extended drives in which both teams could not capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Moravian began the quarter with a lengthy drive but were unable to connect on a 42-yard field goal attempt. Susquehanna followed suit with a long drive, but a fumble took the team away from a scoring opportunity.
The Greyhounds took the next drive into the fourth quarter, where Shelton was able to pick up a blocked field goal attempt and return it 75 yards for the River Hawks and give the team an 18-14 lead.
Neither team scored for the next 13 minutes of action as drive after drive resulted in punts, but the Greyhounds were able to capitalize late in the fourth quarter on a long drive that was capped off by a 5-yard touchdown pass with 17 seconds remaining to take the lead for good.
The River Hawks were unable to score in the closing seconds and the team dropped a close one, 21-18.
Susquehanna has a bye week next Saturday and returns to action on Saturday, October 20 when it travels to Collegeville for a matchup with Ursinus at 1 p.m.
