UMW Baseball Drops Saturday Twinbill to Washington (Md.)

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a pair of games to visiting Washington (Md.) College on Saturday at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles slip to 0-4 on the season.

UMW dropped the opener, 12-10. The Eagles jumped ahead with two runs in the first, as Caleb McAlister, Garrett Lyons, and Norman Holcomb hit consecutive singles, and Canon Davies followed with a sacrifice fly. The Shoremen took the lead with five runs in the second, but UMW answered with three runs in the bottom of the third. Lyons scored on a Davies groundout, Holcomb scored on a David Lambertson single, and Ty Lowe followed with an RBI double.

Washington College went back ahead with a run in the fourth, but the Eagles answered with one in the bottom of the inning, as Lyns singled and scored on a Holcomb single. After a home run put the Shoremen back in front, UMW regained the lead with a two-run triple from Jonathan Sedmak.

The visitors scored twice in the seventh to take a 9-8 lead, but Lowe doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh, and scored on an Owen Reilly groundout after a passed ball. Washington scored three in the eighth on a bases-clearing double.

Lyons went 5-5 with a pair of doubles to lead the offense, while Holcomb and Lowe each had four hits.

In the second game, Washington posted one run in the first, and held a 1-0 lead to the fourth, when the Eagles knotted the score on a Nick Ciuffreda single, groundout, and walk to load the bases. Andrew Gearhart's RBI groundout plated the run.

Washington scored five runs in the fifth before UMW plated four in the bottom of the frame. Sam Freeborne knocked in a pair of runs, and Gearhart added a two-run single.

Lyons had a single and two walks, while Gearhart provided three RBI.

The Eagles will visit Washington College for another twinbill on Sunday at noon.
