Men's Tennis Opens Fall Slate with Haverford Invitational

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College men's tennis team opened up the fall portion of the 2022-23 season with the first day of the Haverford Invitational at the Bramall and Marshall Courts on Saturday. The Fords looked strong in individual matchups with Vassar and Centennial Conference foe Washington College to wrap up the first day of play. 

The Fords earned a key win in doubles play with the pairing of James McKenzie and Aiden Kim grabbing an 8-6 pro-set over the Vassar team of Benjamin Almquist and Miles Sondergaard Jensen. Other wins for the Fords came in singles as Stefan Johnson took down Almquist in three sets, falling 5-7 in the first set before prevailing 6-3 in the second and earning the win in the superbreaker by a 10-5 final.  Kirin Eicher then grabbed a marathon win over Ethan Mantell (3-6, 7-6(5), 13-11) to set the tone for the second match of the day with Washington. 

Against competition from the Shoremen, the doubles pairings of Adam Chow and McKenzie breezed past Christian Gruyon and Landon Strober (8-2) while Kim and Abhinav Nallapareddy did the same against Aaradith Ravichandran and Ryohei Kawai (8-3). Danny Loder and Max Beckwith got the win over Andrew Province and David Perkins (8-4). 

In singles play, Haverford won five of its six matchups. Highlights included Andreas Wingert prevailing over Andre-Remi Jakobi (7-5, 6-4), Kim beating Strober (6-3, 6-3), Loder prevailing over Kawai (4-6, 6-3, 11-9), McKenzie rallying past Jack Fanshawe (3-6, 6-4, 10-5), and Niki Lavu taking down Perkins (6-3, 4-6, 10-7). 

Singles and doubles action continues Sunday afternoon with Vassar, Washington College, and Hamilton all competing on campus. Haverford will compete against doubles and singles players from Hamilton to wrap up round-robin action. The contests will begin at 10 a.m.
