Johns Hopkins Defeats Haverford, 2-1

Thompson, Brown-Scherer Score for the Blue Jays

The Basics
• Score: #17 Johns Hopkins-2, Haverford-1
• Records: JHU (8-1, 3-0 CC) • HC (4-4, 0-3 CC)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Homewood Field
• The Short Story: The 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey rode a pair of first-half goals to a 2-1 win over visiting Haverford in Centennial Conference action Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
• Hopkins grabbed the early lead when freshman Izzy Thompson was in the right place at the right time. Sophomore Michaela Corvi fired a shot from the top of the circle off a Seema Sajjan penalty corner and Thompson redirected it at the right post just 7:22 in.
• Just over eight minutes later, the Blue Jays grabbed what turned out to be a much-needed insurance goal. On another Blue Jay corner, junior Katie McErlean blasted a shot off an Abby Birk insert. McErlean's shot was blocked, but freshman Maddie Brown-Scherer pounced on the rebound and buried it at 15:37.
• The Fords made a push just past the 24-minute mark, firing off three shots in a nine-second span. Junior Jodie Baris was there to turn away all three in succession.
• With time winding down in the game, Haverford pressured the Hopkins defense and got one past Baris at 66:54 to make it a 2-1 game. The Fords were able to cash in on a penalty corner when Roxy Vassighi lofted a high shot and Ariana Sulpizio batted it out of the air and into the cage.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 31-9-1 all-time against Haverford and has won three straight in the series. Each of the last four meetings have been decided by just one goal.
• The Blue Jays ride their win streak to four and at 8-1 are off to their best start since the 2008 season when JHU won its first 11 games.

Inside the Box Score
• Thompson is now tied with Corvi and Birk for the team lead in goals with four. Corvi tallied her team-leading and career-best third assist of the season.
• Baris finished with five saves in the win for the Blue Jays while Fords' goalie Hannah Roth made eight in the loss.
• Hopkins outshot Haverford, 19-7, and had a 10-9 advantage in corners.
