Wrestling Posts Convincing Wins Over NJCU, Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. - The McDaniel College wrestling team won nine of 12 contested matches as the Green Terror posted convincing wins over New Jersey City and Waynesburg Friday afternoon at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

McDaniel (6-7) snapped a seven-match losing streak with double digit wins against the Gothic Knights and host Yellow Jackets.

The Green Terror won seven of eight contested matches against New Jersey City en route to a 38-11 victory in the opener, posting three wins by fall. Senior Alex LaVeck recorded his team-leading 10th pin of the season when he needed just 1:29 to defeat Ty Bailey at 165 pounds.

LaVeck improved to 13-5 this season with 10 of those wins coming by fall.

LaVeck's win marked the fourth lead change in six matches as he gave McDaniel a 17-11 advantage before junior Yoann Olympio recorded his first fall of the season, dispatching of Jaydin Mahon in just 1:04 at 174 pounds.

After senior Michael Bromley sealed the win with a decision at 184 pounds, junior Jaedyn Harris earned his fifth fall of the season at 197, defeating Marcus Hebron in 2:45. Ranked at No. 19 in Division III by The Open Mat, Harris leads the team with a 12-1 dual match record this season.

Freshman Ryan Athey made his collegiate debut against the Gothic Knights and picked up his first career win with a 12-6 decision over Andy Beras at 141 pounds.

In their second match, the Green Terror posted a 42-12 victory against Waynesburg, earning five of their seven wins and 30 of their 42 points, by forfeit. The team led 12-0 after forfeits at 125 and 141 pounds when freshman Andrew Allen earned his first career fall in just 31 seconds at 149 to increase that to 18-0.

McDaniel stretched that lead to 30-0 with forfeit wins at 157 and 165 before the Yellow Jackets got on the board with a fall from Colby Morris at 174 pounds. Morris entered the match ranked eighth nationally by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Bromley remained unbeaten in six matches at 184 pounds this season when he earned a first period fall against Ayden Bishoff in 2:30.

Harris picked up his sixth consecutive win with a forfeit at 197 before Waynesburg's Luke Lavanway provided the final margin after a win by injury default.

The Green Terror return to action and face their first Centennial Conference opponent next Saturday, Jan. 21 when they host Ursinus inside the Gill Center beginning at 1 p.m.
