How it Happened
Despite pulling out to an eight-point lead in the second quarter, the Blue Jays (4-3) fell to the Gettysburg Bullets 68-46 on Wednesday night. Gettysburg used a strong defensive performance to double up Johns Hopkins, 36-18, in the second half of the contest. Diarra Oden led the Blue Jays with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists in the loss.
Early on in the second half, the Blue Jays ripped off an 8-2 run, getting five straight points from Lyndsey Hoyd followed by an Emily Howie three-pointer to make it a 23-15 contest. The Bullets responded with the next six points, cutting the deficit down to two. Gettysburg used another 6-0 run just moments later, finishing with a Carly Rice layup to give the Bullets a 27-25 lead with 3:21 remaining in the half. Howie drilled a triple with 1:29 to play in the quarter, giving Hopkins a 28-27 lead, the last they would hold in the contest. Christina Richson scored the final five points of the half, sending Gettysburg into the locker room leading by four.
Gettysburg continued that run into the second half, using the final five points of the first half and the first eight of the second half to rip off a 13-0 run spanning almost seven minutes. The Blue Jays first bucket of the third quarter came on a Halie Egan baseline jumper with 3:51 left in the corner, cutting the deficit to 40-30. Howie hit a pair of free throws with 90 seconds left in the quarter, cutting the deficit to 12 heading into the fourth.
The Blue Jays followed a 2-14 shooting third quarter with a 4-14 fourth quarter, watching the Gettysburg lead swell to 19 with less than five minutes to play. The Bullets scored the final points of the contest with 25 seconds remaining, getting a pair of free throws from Ashley Gehrin to give them a 68-46 victory, their sixth straight.
