The Muhlenberg men's basketball team led from start to finish and defeated King's, 87-75, to move to 4-0 on the season.
The 4-0 start, which the Mules will carry into this weekend's Scotty Wood Tournament, is their first since 1997. Oddly, they had started 3-0 eight times since but lost their fourth game each time.
Junior
Spencer Duke recorded his first career double-double for Muhlenberg, finishing with 15 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Freshman
Justin Allen (pictured above) tied his career high with 14 points, with senior
Matt Gnias (15) and sophomores
Dallas Hoffman (11) and
Dan Gaines (10) also scoring in double figures.
Gnias hit two three-pointers and junior
Michael Morreale drilled one in the first three minutes to stake the Mules to an early 9-2 lead. The bulge grew to 17 (40-23) late in the first half, but the Monarchs (3-2) whittled away at the lead, closing to within eight at halftime and four (57-53) midway through the second half.
Muhlenberg promptly went on an 11-2 run to re-establish control. Gaines drove in for a layup and dished to Duke and Hoffman for layups for two of his six assists.
The Mules led by as many as 21 in the closing minutes and were able to send several freshmen onto the court for their first varsity action.
