WESTMINSTER, Md.—A goal for Swarthmore College Field Hockey 45 seconds into Saturday's game at McDaniel College was just the start the Garnet needed en route to a 4-1 win. The Garnet earned their third win of the year and their first win in Centennial Conference play.

Swarthmore junior midfielder Samie Martin tallied the early goal, her first of two on the day. Martin also pitched in an assist.

Freshmen Grace Twitchell and Andie Tappenden got in on the scoring as well. Twitchell caged her second of the season in the third minute of action, guiding in a hit from Marion Carr. Tappenden struck her first goal of the year in the 17th minute off a pass from Martin.

Up 3-0 after the first half, Swarthmore tacked on an insurance goal in the 34rd minute as Tappenden returned the favor, setting up a close-range goal for Martin.

McDaniel posted its goal in the 40th minute, but couldn't muster anything more thanks to a strong defensive effort from Swarthmore. Swarthmore out-shot the hosts 13-4 and 12-2 in on target attempts. Swarthmore's penalty corner advantage held at 7-2.

The Garnet return home for a non-conference game with Eastern University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
