Irondi Scores 22 but Women's Basketball Suffers Loss to Johns Hopkins

COLLEGEVILLE, PA. – The Ursinus College Women's Basketball team suffered a setback loss to Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon 63-43. The Bears fell behind early trailing by 13 after the first quarter and were never able to gain the momentum to establish a comeback.

Ursinus was led by freshman forward Chinwe Irondi who scored 22 points while collecting seven rebounds. Gabby Downs recorded 8 points and two assists while both Kelly Grant and Sarah DiLello contributed with four points apiece.

The Blue Jays jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before Irondi scored her first basket of the game. Johns Hopkins would score the next ten points of the contest and stretch their lead to 15 after Kara Milliken knocked home a mid-range jump shot. Irondi would close out the first quarter with a layup to cut the Bears deficit to 13.

After the Blue Jays would open the quarter with a three-pointer from Michaela O'Neil, Ursinus would go on a 11-7 run before Erin Walsh extended the Hopkins lead to 16. With 52 seconds remaining in the first half, Downs would score her first three-pointer, making the halftime score 37-24 Blue Jays.

After an Irondi layup, the Blue Jays would answer with a three-pointer and two free throws to make the score 42-26. Hopkins would go on a 5-0 run before a Margrett Brown free throw made the score 47-27. The Blue Jays stretched their lead to 20 before the Bears scored the final four points of the quarter as they trailed 51-33 after three quarters.

Irondi and Downs would combine for six points in the final frame but the margin proved to be too large as the Bears fell at home 63-43. The Blue Jays offense was lights out all afternoon as they shot 51% (25-49) from the field and 32% from three. Although the Bears were able to force 18 turnovers, they struggled from the field, shooting 27% from the field. Johns Hopkins relied on their depth, as seven players scored five or more points. They were led by guard Emily Howie who scored 12 points (4-6 3PT) and recorded five rebounds and four assists.

The Bears will look to bounce back on Wednesday as they travel to Centennial Conference foe Bryn Mawr for a 7PM start.
