Mary Washington Rallies to Beat Hopkins in Overtime

The Basics
• Score: Mary Washington-2, Johns Hopkins-1 (OT)

• The Short Story: Host Mary Washington scored with 1:07 remaining in the first overtime to defeat the 22nd-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team, 2-1, on Saturday in the final game of the UMW Classic.  
 
How it Happened
• Hopkins struck first with junior Jonathon Brown's first goal of the season. Classmate RJ Moore played the ball over the top of the defense, Brown slipped in and slotted a shot past the Eagles' keeper in the 31st minute.
• Mary Washington drew level in the 50th minute when Gabriel Soriano finished a cross from Idrissa Barrie. The teams battled for 40 minutes but neither team could get the go-ahead go, forcing overtime. With time winding down in the first overtime, the Eagles got a series of corner kicks and converted on the third attempt. Soriano took the kick, sending it to Ben Ahrens, who beat junior Xander LeFevre for the winner.    
 
What it Means
• Hopkins falls to 0-6-1 all-time against Mary Washington. This was the second straight overtime game and fourth straight one-goal decision in the series. All but one of the seven all-time meetings have been decided by one goal.
 
Inside the Box Score
• Moore's assist was the 11th of his career, moving him into a tie for 24th in school history.
• LeFevre finished with five saves for the Blue Jays, while Kenny Kurtz made a pair in the win.
 
Up Next
• Hopkins is back in action on Saturday, September 7 as it hosts the Blue Jay Invitational at Homewood Field. Hopkins will take on Washington & Lee at 1:00 pm.
