YORK, Pa. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team registered five place-winners and finished fourth out of 12 teams at the New Standard Invitational hosted by York College of Pennsylvania on Friday and Saturday.
 
Johnson & Wales, ranked 10th in Division III, won the tournament with 149 points.  Averett, ranked 21st overall, finished second with 122 points, while 12th-ranked College of New Jersey was third with 113.5 points.  The Generals accumulated 99 points and Ithaca rounded out the Top 5 with 94 points.
 
Leading the way for W&L was junior Ryan Luth (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran), who took home first-place honors in the 157-pound weight class.  Luth finished the tournament with a 4-0 record.  On Saturday, he tech-falled Thomas Baldwin of Averett in the quarterfinals (16-1), before posting a 12-2 major decision over Ursinus' Shawn Machesano in the semifinals.  In the championship match, Luth emerged with a 7-3 decision over Hunter Gutierrez of Stevens.
 
Junior Riley Parker (Virginia Beach, Va. / First Colonial) faced two ranked wrestlers on his way to finishing third overall in the 125-pound weight class.  He dropped a 7-4 decision to seventh-ranked Samuel Braswell of Averett in the quarterfinals, but rebounded to take out third-ranked Matt Caccamise of Brockport by a score of 10-8 to advance to the third-place match.  He then pinned Nick Denora of the College of New Jersey in the third-place match in a time of 6:23.
 
First-year Nic Zamaloff (Wall Township, N.J. / Academy of Allied Health and Science) and senior Joe Salerno (Princeton Junction, N.J. / West Windsor-Plainsboro South) both finished fourth-place in their respective weight classes. 
 
Zamaloff completed the tournament with a 4-2 record, advancing to the third-place match with a 3-2 victory over Austin Manning of the Merchant Marine Academy.  He then dropped a 9-4 decision to Matt Beyer of Ithaca in the third-place bout.
 
Salerno also finished with a 4-2 mark, winning each of his matches by fall.  He pinned Matt Surich of The College of New Jersey in 2:58 to advance to the third-place match, where he dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Steven Ocampo of Johnson & Wales.
 
Sophomore John Ryan Sedovy (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge County) took fifth in the 197-pound bracket by defeating Joe Benedict of Brockport State by a count of 5-2.  Sedovy finished the tournament with a 4-2 overall record as well.
 
Senior Brad Basham (Burlington, Mass. / Buckingham Browne & Nichols) also advanced to the fifth-place match at 184 pounds, falling to Joe Daddario of The College of New Jersey in his shot to earn a spot on the podium.
 
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Southern Virginia for a 7:00 pm dual match.
