COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's tennis team saw its Centennial Conference playoff hopes extinguished in heartbreaking fashion on Tuesday, dropping a 5-4 nail-biter to Bryn Mawr in its home finale.

The Bears had inserted themselves into the playoff race with victories in three of their previous four matches, and a win over the Owls would have given them a shot at winning a tiebreaker on the final day of the regular season. But it was not to be as Bryn Mawr took four of the six singles courts, including the final two matches of the afternoon, to secure victory.

Ursinus (9-10, 3-6) took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, with rookies Maddie Russell and Cara Freedman rolling to an 8-2 triumph at No. 2 before sophomore Madisen Harvey and junior Summer Burkholder took down an 8-5 win at No. 3.

The Owls (9-10, 3-6) jumped on top with convincing wins on the top two singles courts, but a pair of first-year players came through in the clutch to give the Bears the upper hand once more. Brenna Trkula secured a 6-3, 6-3 result at No. 3 singles, and Freedman followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4.

That put Ursinus on the precipice of victory, but the Owls got the best of the two matches at the back of the lineup. Bryn Mawr pulled out a 6-3, 7-6 (5) battle at No. 5, and the visitors' No. 6 player came back from a 5-2 second-set deficit to seal the proceedings with a 7-5, 7-5 triumph.

The Bears conclude their season at Gettysburg on Saturday.
