#14 Bishops Take Out #12 Johns Hopkins 5-4, advance to Sweet 16

BALTIMORE, MD - The #14 NC Wesleyan University men's tennis team upset the 12th ranked and #1 team in the region, host Johns Hopkins University 5-4 on Saturday in the NCAA Regional Semis to earn their 4th straight trip to the NCAA Sweet 16. The match was played at the Naval Academy's Indoor Courts due to inclement weather.

The 29-4 Bishops will now play #3 Tufts University (Mass.) in the Regional final on Sunday at 1:00 PM at Johns Hopkins. 

Wesleyan senior Roberto Puig rallied from a 2-6 deficit and overcame numerous cramps to defeat his foe 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 at the #4 spot to clinch the win for the Bishops. 

"Incredible Battle and heart by these Bishops," commented head coach Albie Brice. "The match took almost five hours with players cramping. It was one of the most gutsiest matches I have ever been a part of in my coaching career."

Wesleyan first took a 2-1 lead after the doubles as the top team of senior Jhonny Acosta and freshman Diego Segovia won 8-4 at the top line while the team of John Falke and senior JP Vallejo then dominated at the #3 spot winning 8-0. The 9th ranked senior doubles team of Max Robinson and Puig then dropped a close 8-6 decision at the second spot.

In singles, Falke pulled out a 7-5, 6-1 win at the #3 spot while Acosta fell 2-6, 4-6 at the top spot. Vallejo then fell 2-6, 4-6 as well at the second spot as JHU tied the match at 3 apiece.

Then after junior Augusto Roca fell 5-7, 6-7 at the 5 spot in a heartbreaker, freshman Luca Knese stepped up and blew through his foe 6-2, 6-3 at the 6 spot to tie the match at four apiece. Puig's heroics then sealed the win for Wesleyan pushing them onto the Sweet 16 and regional final on Sunday.
