Women's Tennis Suffers Setback to No. 36 Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Ursinus Bears women's tennis team was defeated 8-1 by No. 36 Haverford in Centennial Conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

 

 

With the loss, the Bears fell to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in Centennial Conference action as they wrapped up a stretch of facing three-straight nationally ranked opponents. Meanwhile, the Fords improved to 10-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

 

 

Haverford won all three of the doubles points as they took the initial 3-0 lead in the match. At the first doubles spot, Haverford's Ellie Esterowitz and Abbey Russano downed the Bears sophomore duo of first-year Allie Armour and senior Maddie Russell 8-0 to give the Fords their first point of the match. Sophomores Avery Samer and Caitlin Vinsonhaler were downed 8-2 in the No. 2 doubles spot by Rachael Fitzgerald and Mimi Lavin while sophomore Claire Burke and first-year Shannon Stewart were edged 8-6 at the No. 3 doubles spot by Annie Barrett and Summer Williams.

 

 

In singles, the Fords clinched the match by winning the next five points, but junior Ava Compagnoni grabbed the Bears a point by besting Liv Pindzola 6-2, 0-6, (10-2) at No. 6 singles. Vinsonhaler was defeated 6-1, 6-0 by Esterowitz to open the singles matches before Lavin downed Russell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles to clinch the match. Russano took down Armour 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 singles position while Burke fell to Fitzgerald 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Samer dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Barrett at No. 5 singles and Compagnoni closed the match with her thrilling win.
