Wrestling Splits Home Duals

Gettysburg beats Delaware Valley 36-17

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College wrestling team split its two matches inside Bream Gym Saturday afternoon, dropping a 27-19 decision to Johns Hopkins University in a Centennial Conference affair before beating Delaware Valley University 36-17.

Match Highlights
  • Freshman Jake Stein (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) put Gettysburg on the board with a 15-0 technical fall over Kareem Chambers at 133. Stein dominated the opening period with four near-falls and clinched the technical fall with an escape to start the third frame.
  • Junior Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) wasted no time in his match up with Hanting Wong at 141, taking his foe down and turning his shoulders to the mat for his sixth pin of the season.
  • Jared Osborne upset senior Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) at 149 pounds, scoring a pair of takedowns in the first and second rounds. Devlin maintained the top position in the third and gained a penalty point and a riding time point, but Osborne survived a last-second near-fall try to pull out the win.
  • Sophomore Ray Martin (Downingtown, Pa./West Chester Henderson) scored takedowns and near-falls in each of the first two periods against Jack Albin at 157. Martin opened the third with an escape and scored a takedown shortly after to clinch the technical fall with 45 seconds left.
  • Junior Marc Larson (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) rounded out Gettysburg's winners with a 5-3 win over Bradlee Lamontagne at 165. Larson recorded a pair of takedowns in the first two periods and closed the scoring with an escape in the third frame.

Match Highlights
  • Gettysburg took advantage of an injury-depleted Delaware Valley squad with five forfeit victories.
  • Sophomore Mason Canonico (Kailua, Hawaii/Punahou) posted a pin at 174, taking Jake Nase to the mat and tilting his shoulders in 1:19.
 
By the Numbers
  • Gettysburg moved to 5-5 in dual competition this season.
  • Martin improved to 20-7 on the season. Sixteen of his wins have been the result of pins, technical falls, and major decisions.
  • Thompson moved into the top 25 on Gettysburg's all-time wins list. The junior is 19-11 on the year and 70-37 in his career, tying him for 23rd all-time.
  • Devlin remains one win shy of 100 for his career. The senior is now 99-34.
 
The Series
Each of the last six meetings between Gettysburg and Johns Hopkins has been decided by nine points or less. The Bullets hold the lead in the series 32-22. The Orange and Blue have won the last two meetings with Delaware Valley, but trail in the series 19-2.
 
Next Up
Gettysburg takes part in the Penn College Duals next Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. The Bullets will face Penn College, Hunter College, New York University, and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.
