Johns Hopkins Splits with Dickinson, 15th-ranked Mary Washington

• The Short Story: The 24th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team wrapped up the regular season with a split on Saturday as JHU beat Dickinson, 8-1, but then lost to 15th-ranked Mary Washington, 5-4.
 
How it Happened • Dickinson
• Hopkins took an early 2-1 lead over Dickinson and then swept the singles matches to wrap up another undefeated conference slate. Sophomore Alex Matisse and senior Colin Muraika lost just one game in earning the first point of the match with their win over Joey Bolanos and Andrew Lai at third doubles.
• Junior Aaron Carey and senior Scott Thygesen pushed the Blue Jays' lead to two with an 8-4 win over Derek Chen and Justin Pace at first. Sam Coan and Leonid Sorkin grabbed a point for the Red Devils when they beat junior Austin Gu and sophomore Jack Hogan, 8-5, at second.
• Sophomore Matt Lurie put Hopkins up 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Bolanos at fourth singles. Freshman Brian Wang then beat Pace 6-3, 6-3 at third. Freshman Naevin Anukornchaikul clinched the win for the Blue Jays with a 6-3, 6-1 win at second over Coan.
• Sophomore Robby Simon followed with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Lai at sixth to make it a 6-1 match. Freshman Eric Burrer prevailed in three sets over Chen 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (8) at fifth. Sophomore Eric Yoo rallied to defeat Sorkin 0-6, 6-2, 6-4 at first to close out the win.
 
How it Happened • Mary Washington
• The Blue Jays once again took a 2-1 lead after doubles but the Eagles rallied to win four of the five singles matches to avoid the upset. Gu and junior Joe Cartledge upset the second-ranked doubles team in the region, Moses Hutchinson and Matt Miles, 8-5 at first for the first point of the match.
• Carey and Thygesen followed with an upset of their own, beating the 11th-ranked duo of Ryland Byrd and Derek Hagino, 8-6, at second. Michael Fleming and Patrick Hughes cut the deficit in half with an 8-6 win over sophomore Vishnu Joshi and junior Vik Vasan at third.
• Cartledge pushed the Blue Jays' lead to 3-1 when he beat Byrd 6-4, 6-2 at fourth singles. Miles made it a one-point match again as he beat Thygesen 6-3, 6-3 at second. Cole Tecce then tied the match with a 7-6, 6-2 win at sixth over Anukornchaikul.
• Gu answered with a come-from-behind win over Hughes, the 10th-ranked player in the region, at first. He beat Hughes 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to put the Blue Jays on top 4-3. Hutchinson responded with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Kim at third to tie the match at four. Hagino then clinched the win for the Eagles with a tightly-contested 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 win over Carey at fifth.
 
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 32-4 all-time against Dickinson and has now won 26 straight in the series. The Blue Jays fall to 14-6 all-time against the Eagles, who snap a three-game skid in the series. The loss to Mary Washington snaps Hopkins' nine-match win streak on the season.
• JHU wraps up its third straight undefeated Centennial Conference season and 13th overall. The Blue Jays have won 27 straight regular season conference matches and 118 of their last 119.
 
Up Next
• Hopkins will host the Centennial Conference Tournament as the number one seed next weekend at the JHU Tennis Courts. Hopkins will face the winner of Dickinson and Franklin & Marshall in Saturday's semifinal.
