Volleyball Wins Opening Set, But Loses in Four to Haverford

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College volleyball team (6-13, 0-5) won its first set over Haverford since 1999, but lost in four sets to the Fords on Wednesday evening. The Bears took the opening set, but dropped the next three.

The two sides traded leads early with six ties as neither team led by more than two points. Finally, tied at 15, the Bears went on a 5-1 run to take a 20-16 lead. Leading the charge on the run was Katie Cressman who fired two kills as well as Kelly Piotrowicz who recorded an ace. Behind another pair of kills from Cressman, the Bears took five of the final seven points to win the set 25-20 – their first over the Fords since 1999.

The Bears fell looked to continue the early success, but were unable to recover from early deficits the rest of the match. Ursinus fell behind 11-6 in both the second and third sets before the Fords stormed to a 13-3 lead in the fourth.  

Cressman led the Bears with a season-high 11 kills while Grace Sullivan and Piotrowicz recorded 15 digs apiece. Piotrowicz is just 62 digs away from 1,000 in her career. Rachael Girard recorded a double-double as she dished out 16 assists with 14 digs.

The Bears will play at home on Saturday when they host Franklin & Marshall.
