Falcons Swept on Day Two of the Fastpitch Dreams Classic

 

Myrtle Beach, SC.  – The Fitchburg State softball team continued their spring trip to Myrtle Beach this afternoon, dropping a 12-0 decision to Fairmont State in the first game of the day before falling 10-6 to Gettysburg in the nightcap.

How It Happened – Game 1

Fairmont State, the defending DII Mountain East Conference (MEC) champions, raced out to an early 5-0 advantage as Peyton Wetherholt (Frederick, MD) and Jordan Novack (Latrobe, PA) notched RBI hits.

Freshman Adria Stys (Lowell, Mass.) belted her first collegiate hit to lead off the third inning for the Falcons. Senior Madison Mantegani (Bellingham, Mass.) and Molly Grass (Rockland, Mass.) drew back-to-back walks but the Falcons couldn't capitalize with the bases loaded.

Fairmont State upped their margin (11-0) in the following frame. Junior Alexa Andrews (Chester, W. Va.) delivered a two-out double to left center scoring two Falcons.

Fairmont State secured the victory in the bottom of the fourth with a single up the middle from Hannah Workman (Clarkston, Mich.) driving in Judeah Morris (Columbus, Ohio resulting in the 12-0 final.

Inside the Numbers – Game 1

  • Grass, Stys, and Julia Gauvin (Granby, Mass.) had the hits for the Falcons
  • Newcomer Madison Solt (Salem, NH) took the loss for Fitchburg State, allowing four earned runs on three hits

 

How It Happened – Game 2

Trailing 1-0 in the first inning the Falcons capitalized on shaky pitching from Gettysburg to forge ahead 3-1. Gauvin picked up an RBI the hard way with a hit-by-pitch and Kiara Bigeau (Clinton, Mass.) drew a walk for the RBI.

Lauren O'Leary (Manasquan, NJ) hit a 3-run home run to give the Bullets a 4-3 lead in the second.  Two innings later O'Leary connected for a second home run to extend the lead to 9-3.

In the bottom of the fourth, junior Allison Pogorek (Millbury, Mass.) delivered a single up the middle scoring Ella Marshall (Gloucester, Mass.), and Madison Mantegani (Bellingham, Mass.) drew a four-pitch walk for an RBI to cut the deficit to 9-5.

The Green and Gold kept the game close turning in a defensive gem with a double play in the fifth inning. Mantegani struck again in the sixth with an RBI single to make it a 9-6 ballgame. However, Gettysburg would tack on an insurance run in the seventh.

Inside the Numbers – Game 2

  • Cahill suffered the setback, allowing 10 runs on 16 hits and a pair of Ks for the Falcons
  • Mantegani was 1-for-2 with 2 walks and 2 RBIs
  • Lauren Kirkconnell (Dayville, Conn.) was 1-for-2 with a double

The Falcons have a quick turnaround and are back at it tomorrow facing Madonna at 9:00 AM and Sweet Briar at 3:00 PM.
