Junior
Spencer Duke scored a career-high 26 points as the Muhlenberg men's basketball team started the 2019-20 season with a 95-87 win at Moravian.
Sophomore
Dan Gaines added 19 points and junior
Michael Morreale chipped in with 12 for the Mules, who topped the 90-point mark in a season-opening road game for the first time in program history. They had scored 90 points in their first game only one time previously in the last 11 years.
Muhlenberg shot a blazing 60.5 percent from the field in the first half to open up a 56-49 lead at the break. Duke
(pictured above) topped his previous career high of 12 points in the first 20 minutes alone, netting 14.Â
Senior
Matt Gnias hit a pair of three-pointers to bookend a 13-2 run that broke a 35-all tie and gave the Mules a 48-37 lead with three minutes left in the half.
The Greyhounds opened the second half on an 8-0 run to take the lead, but Muhlenberg came back with a 10-0 run of its own, capped by a pair of three-pointers from Morreale and sophomore
Noah Watson.
Moravian never caught up but got within one on two occasions, the last with 3:07 remaining. But Gaines stopped the bleeding with a runner in the lane, and the defense held the Greyhounds to just one field goal the rest of the way.
Freshman
Justin Allen pulled down 10 rebounds in his collegiate debut, helping the Mules to a 44-28 advantage on the boards.
Duke (9-for-13) and Gaines (9-for-11) combined to shoot 75.0 percent from the field.
