Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Remains Undefeated with Last-Minute Win

Freshman Tara Szawaluk scored 12 of her 23 points in the fourth quarter as the Muhlenberg women's basketball team came from behind to defeat Lehigh Valley rival Moravian, 57-53, and remain undefeated on the season.

Szawaluk, making her first career start, came into the game with a total of 30 points all season and was having a fine game through three quarters before taking it over in the fourth.

Although they came back from as many as seven points down to tie the game twice in the third quarter, the Mules (9-0) never led until Szawaluk's three-point play with 4:39 left made it 48-46.

The Greyhounds (7-3) tied it with a jumper before Szawaluk drove in for a layup with 2:55 on the clock. Moravian hit a three at the 1:58 mark to go back ahead, 51-50, but Szawaluk answered with a three of her own to put Muhlenberg back up top, 53-51.

After both teams missed threes, Moravian tied the game on a bucket with less than 30 seconds to play. Szawaluk again had the answer, driving in for a layup with 13.1 seconds left to give the Mules the lead for good at 55-53.

On the defensive end, the Mules forced a tough three-pointer that missed everything, and senior Sara Dilly (pictured above) hit two free throws with five-tenths of a second left to ice the win.

Szawaluk finished 9-of-11 from the field, recording the most points by a Muhlenberg freshman since 2009, and added 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Her backup at point guard, freshman Tori Dowd, also played well, scoring the first 5 points of her career and recording a steal without committing a turnover in 9 minutes of time.

Senior Carley Hamilton finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Dilly had 6 points and 4 steals, while freshman Mikaela McGarvey gave the Mules solid minutes off the bench in the fourth quarter.

Muhlenberg, which entered the day as one of 21 remaining undefeated teams in Division III, is 9-0 for the seventh time in program history, and the third time in the last four years.

The last eight meetings between the Mules and Greyhounds have all been decided by single-digit margins.
