Franklin & Marshall Edges Johns Hopkins in NCAA Semifinal

The Basics
• Score: #6 Franklin & Marshall-3, #5 Johns Hopkins-1
• Records: JHU (19-3) • FMC (20-3)
• Location: Manheim, PA • Spooky Nook Sports
• The Short Story: In the rubber match between fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins and sixth-ranked Franklin & Marshall, it was the Diplomats that came out on top, 3-1, in the NCAA Semifinals Saturday. The Blue Jays were facing a team they had beaten twice already this season, but that was playing just eight miles from its campus in Lancaster, PA.

How it Happened
• After a scoreless first half in which the teams combined for 12 shots, Franklin & Marshall scored a pair of quick goals early in the third. Abby Straub took a pass from Darby Klopp and fired a shot from the right wing that snuck inside the left post just 2:23 into the half.
• The Diplomats doubled their lead just 100 seconds later as Klopp picked up her second assist. She took a shot from just inside the circle and Lily Mynott batted it into the cage from just in front.
• Hopkins answered at the 37:47-mark to slice the deficit in half. Off an Abby Birk corner insert, senior Katie McErlean took a touch, faked her defender, and then slotted a low shot inside the near post. It was the 23rd time this season the Blue Jays scored off a penalty corner. Mynott pushed the lead back to two with 2:44 to go in the third quarter when she dribbled down the left side and then cut back before slipping a shot inside the left post to score what would be the final goal of the game.

What it Means
• Hopkins slips to 26-16-1 all-time against Franklin & Marshall, as the Dips snap the Blue Jays' three-game win streak in the series.
• The Blue Jays end the season with a school-record-tying 19 wins, finishing with a 19-3 record. The senior class of Christina Glaser, Sophie Kim, Maddie Stabinski and McErlean finish their careers with 59 wins – the most of any class in school history.

Inside the Box Score
• McErlean's goal was her team-leading 15th of the season, the most by a Blue Jay since Emily Miller scored a record 23 in 2008. It is also tied for the fifth most in school single-season history. She ends her career with 32 goals and 81 points to rank sixth and seventh, respectively, in school history.
• Sophomore Kailtin Hall made a pair of saves in the loss. Christina Seery had three while getting a defensive save by Colleen Francis for the Diplomats.
• Hopkins' 77 goals this season are the second most in school history and are two shy of the school record. The Blue Jays' 55 assists are also the second most in single-season history.
• Franklin & Marshall edged Hopkins in shots, 12-11, while the Blue Jays had a 9-5 advantage in corners.
