In a matchup of two nationally ranked wrestling teams, Muhlenberg (18th in Division III) won the final two bouts to topple East Stroudsburg (19th in Division II), 25-17.
The win was the first ever for the Mules (9-2) against their neighbors to the north. The last time the teams met, five years ago, East Stroudsburg won 45-3.
Muhlenberg led 16-7 following a major decision by senior
Dylan Schwartz at 165, but the Warriors (0-3) scored a major decision (by the top-ranked wrestler in Division II at 174) and a pin in the next two bouts to go up by one.
The lead didn't last for long. Sophomore
Luca Colestock needed only 15 seconds to record the first takedown in his 197-pound bout. With 46 seconds left in the first period, Colestock
(pictured above) took his opponent down to his back for his eighth pin in 18 bouts this season.
Senior
Scott Schaeffer sealed the win at heavyweight with a strong third period. Trailing 1-0 after two, he started down in the third and reversed his opponent almost instantaneously. Schaeffer notched two takedowns before the period ended for a 6-3 decision.
Sophomore
Greg Baum (141) and senior
Austin Sherman (149) also posted wins for the Mules.
Baum was tied 5-5 before taking his opponent down just before time ran out in the second period. He added a takedown and two-point near-fall in the third for a 12-7 decision.
Sherman won 9-3 on the strength of a dominant second period in which he reversed his opponent and flipped him twice for a pair of two-point near-falls.
Schwartz recorded seven takedowns - one just five seconds into the match - in his 12th career major decision. It was also his 80th career win.
