Game Recap: Baseball |

Bridge’s Big Day Leads Garnet In Two Wins

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - Holden Bridge, a junior on the No. 8-ranked Swarthmore College Baseball team, led the Garnet to wins over SUNY-Canton and Susquehanna on Tuesday, bringing the team's win streak to four.

Bridge reached base with a single in nine of his 14 plate appearances over the span of both games. He had seven RBIs and five runs scored on the day. Six of Bridge's hits came in the game against Canton, and he now enters the Centennial Conference record book along side 10 other individuals who have recorded six hits in a single game. He's 19-for-34 this season, earning himself a .559 batting average.

Swarthmore is now 5-2 on the season and scoring at a rate of 13.4 runs per game, the most in the country this season for any Division III team that's played at least seven games.

GAME ONE: Swarthmore 22, SUNY Canton 6

Swarthmore jumped on the Kangaroos early and often, plating five in the first inning and three in the second.

The first-inning RBIs came from seniors Charles Levitt and Jackson Roberts as well as Bridge and freshman Luke Mutz. It was Roberts and Bridge again in the second inning as the pair singled to drive in runs.

The Garnet led 22-1 after the seventh inning as they plated five, one, seven and one in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.

Perhaps the loudest hit of the season thus far was a three-run home run by junior Terell Dale in the sixth. Head coach Matt Midkiff said it either went "off or over the scoreboard." The homer was the first of Dale's collegiate career.

Freshman Paul Cooke had three hits, two RBIs and two runs.

Freshman Kyle Jones-Shah picked up his first college win on the mound by throwing five innings of one-hit and one-run baseball with four strikeouts. Junior Adam Schauer also threw two scoreless innings in the victory.

GAME TWO: Swarthmore 11, Susquehanna 8

The Garnet fell behind 3-0 in the second inning of this one but quickly bounced back to tie it up with scrappy runs in the bottom of the frame.

Senior Conor Elliott's RBI base hit in the third inning gave Swarthmore a lead that they'd never relinquish, sealing up freshman starting pitcher Oliver Hicks' first win as a college player.

Swarthmore took an 11-7 lead into the ninth inning as junior slugger Cole Beeker took the mound and closed the door by allowing just one run to pick up a save. Beeker shattered Swarthmore's single-season hits and RBI records with 74 and 65 in 2018. Not paricularly known for his pitching, the usual first baseman has only allowed two earned runs over 17.2 career innings on the mound over his first three seasons with the team.

Levitt had four hits in this one while Bridge and Mutz each had three. Junior Jared Gillen went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs, three runs and a walk.

The Garnet will attempt to stretch their win streak to five with a game against La Roche College in Port Charlotte, Fla., on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
