Field Hockey Fells Gettysburg With Fantastic Finish

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—After three periods of scoreless play, Swarthmore College Field Hockey went on a frenzy in the fourth quarter en route to a 3-2 win over the Gettysburg College Bullets. Junior midfielder Samie Martin tallied the game-winner for the Garnet with just 47 seconds left.

Swarthmore improved to 6-9 on the year with the win while Gettysburg dipped to 9-7.

Both teams posted six shots through the first three quarters but neither could locate the back of the cage. Swarthmore's Aron Lankford finished with four saves and Gettysburg's Jillian Caputo tabbed six saves in the afternoon.

Swarthmore broke the ice in the 49th minute after earning a corner. Marion Carr dealt a pass to first-year Martina Kampel who wound up and smashed an unstoppable shot from the top of the circle. The goal was Kampel's first of her collegiate career.

The Garnet's 1-0 lead quickly vanished as Gettysburg fired off back-to-back goals in the 52nd and 53rd minutes. Shaken, the Garnet recovered with a goal in the 58th minute. Gettysburg's goalkeeper had left her line to defend play in the middle of the circle, allowing Swarthmore's attack to drift in through the backdoor. Martin tipped a pass to freshman Grace Twitchell on the goalmouth and she scored her second of the season.

With overtime appearing likely as the final minute of play began, Swarthmore worked its way into the circle. Heide van Voorhis had a shot saved, but Martin was there on the right side to gather the rebound. Martin composed herself and slid in the game-winner into the bottom left corner of the cage.

Swarthmore is back home for the final home match of the season on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Muhlenberg.
