SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Sam Sheldon (Tully, N.Y./Tully) sprinted his way to a top-10 finish at the Ninth Annual Galen Piper Alumni Open/Cross Country Challenge hosted by Shippensburg University Friday night.
Gettysburg finished fourth in the team standings with 113 total points, beating out host Shippensburg University (135), which ranks 10th in NCAA Division II, and York (Pa.) College, which ranks 10th in the Mideast Region. The only varsity teams to finish ahead of the Bullets were Dickinson College (42) and Messiah College (55), which rank fifth and fourth, respectively, in the latest regional rankings. Shippensburg's alumni placed third with 106 points.
Sheldon finished ninth overall in the race and seventh among current student-athletes with a time of 20:15.8 on the 6K course. Senior
Alex Petrecca (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) followed in 18th with a time of 20:35.9 and sophomore
Dylan McKeever (Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks East) came in 25th at 20:48.6.
Each of Gettysburg's next three finishers came within one second of each other. Senior
Matt Robinson (Taneytown, Md./Pinkerton Academy (N.H.)), freshman
William Hopkins (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton), and senior
Mike Miller (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) finished 32nd (21:06.2), 33rd (21.06.7), and 34th (21:07.0), respectively. Freshman
Charles Norelli (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) rounded out the team's top scorers in 48th (21:19.4).
Gettysburg will host the Little Three Meet with Dickinson and Franklin & Marshall College next Friday, Sept. 7, at 6 p.m.
