Garnet Top Catholic In Walk-Off Fashion In 11 Innings

SWARTHMORE, Pa.  - Swarthmore College Baseball beat Catholic University 3-2 as senior Jackson Roberts scored senior Charlie Levitt on a fielder's choice to win the game in the bottom of the 11th inning.

With runners on second and third and one out, Roberts dribbled a ball to the shortstop, and Levitt broke for home. The shortstop fired home, and Levitt slid under the tag to score the game-winning run.

The Garnet improve to 24-12 with the win. Before winning a program-record 38 games last season, Swarthmore hadn't won more than 23 games in a season since 1985.

The Cardinals (26-14) plated one in the top of the first, and Swarthmore scored twice in the bottom of the frame. Junior Cole Beeker singled to score junior Holden Bridge, who doubled to leadoff the inning. Roberts doubled to move Beeker to third, and Beeker scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.

Swarthmore used a committee on the mound. Seniors Zach Gonzalez, Charles Groppe and Ricky Conti as well as juniors Sawyer Lake, Jack Corkery and freshman Zack Camp all pitched and combined to allow just one earned run.

Swarthmore head coach Matt Midkiff is unsure of whether or not the team will have another game this season. The Garnet are waiting to hear back from potential opponent on whether or not they'd like to play a game. Swarthmore was ranked 12th in the D3baseball.com regional rankings that were released on Wednesday. There are eight teams in each region of the NCAA Tournament. Last season, Swarthmore was the New York Region Champion and advanced to the Division III World Series for the first time in program history.
