Women's Hoops Comeback Falls Short at McDaniel

WESTMINISTER, MD. -The Ursinus College Women's Basketball team dropped a 57-46 contest against Centennial Conference opponent McDaniel on Monday evening. The Bears battled throughout the contest as both teams struggled from the floor early on.  

McDaniel jumped out to an early 4-1 lead after Katie Klein converted on a layup inside the paint at the 5:00 minute mark. The Bears answered right back with a three-pointer from Natalie Mehl to tie the game at 4 a piece. Klein answered with a three to regain the lead with 4:16 left in the first quarter. After Katie McCusker converted two free throws, a Meggie Burgess layup gave the Green Terror a 9-8 lead to end the first quarter.  

In the second quarter, both teams traded baskets before Chinwe Irondi scored on back-to-back possessions to give Ursinus a 14-11 lead at the 5:46 mark. McDaniel scored on their next two possessions to regain the lead before Natalie Mehl answered with a layup to give the Bears a 16-15 lead. With under 30 seconds remaining in the first half, McDaniel knocked down a free throw to maintain a 19-18 lead at the break.  

To start the second half, after an offensive rebound, McDaniel's Katie Klein made a driving layup to stretch their lead to three. After a Green Terror jump shot rattled home, Irondi scored back-to-back possessions to make the score 25-22 McDaniel. After a McDaniel bucket, Irondi connected on two free throws, and the Bears defense forced a turnover at the 4:37 mark. On the Bears next possession, Kelly Grant found Irondi in the paint who converted a layup to make the score 27-26 McDaniel.  

With 2:28 remaining in the third quarter, Maria D'Aulerio was fouled and connected on two free throws to give the Bears a 29-28 lead. Meggie Burgess answered connecting on two straight jump shots to give McDaniel a 32-29 lead at the 1:41 mark. After Margrett Brown collected three free throws from the charity strip, the score was tied at 32 a piece with 56 seconds left in the third. Katie Klein followed with two free throws of her own to give McDaniel a two-point lead after three quarters.  

To start the fourth, Klein would connect on back-to-back possessions to stretch the lead to six. After an Irondi bucket, McDaniel would score four straight points and held an eight-point lead with 7:59 remaining. The McDaniel lead would stretch to nine after Liliana Overcash buried a three-pointer at the 6:01 mark. After an Irondi free throw, the Bears would cut the deficit to four points with 3:40 to go in the fourth. The Green Terror would score the next nine points and stretch their lead to 13. Grant would score the final two points of the contest as the Bears fell 57-46.  

Chinwe Irondi led the Bears collecting her fifth career double-double, scoring 20 points and hauling in 13 rebounds. Sophomore Natalie Mehl shined for the Bears as well with a double-double, scoring 10 points and 10 rebounds. McDaniel outshot the Bears from the floor shooting 37.5% (21-56) compared to 27.5% (14-51) for Ursinus. The Green Terror's defense controlled the game, forcing 22 turnovers in the contest.  

The Bears will look to bounce back on Friday as they travel to Gettysburg for a 7pm tip off against the Bullets.
