BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins wrestling team won six of 10 bouts with freshman
Dhilan Patel and senior
Brent Lorin winning key matches late to fuel a 23-19 victory over 23
rd-ranked York in Goldfarb Gymnasium Friday night. The win is the first in series history for the Blue Jays, who had lost the previous 24 matches against the Spartans since the series debuted in 1982.
Â
The Blue Jays improve 3-2 overall and 2-0 against nationally-ranked teams this season as they had previously beaten 18
th-ranked Lycoming, 22-21, on November 20. York falls to 0-2 with the loss.
Â
Where the Match Was Won
With the outcome hanging in the balance with three bouts to go and Johns Hopkins clinging to a 17-14 lead, the Blue Jays got back-to-back wins at 125 and 133 to seal the victory. Patel (125) picked up the biggest win of his young career as he scored a 6-3 come-from-behind win over
Jacob Delvecchio. Down 3-0 late in the second period, Patel scored a late takedown to pull within 3-2, added an escape to open the third and then was able to spin behind Delvecchio late before tacking on a point of riding time to grab the 6-3 win and give JHU a 20-14 lead.
Â
Lorin then found himself down 1-0 entering the third period before tying things up with an early escape of his own against
Wilfred Jimenez. Lorin and Jimenez were both strong defensively, but it was Lorin who was able to score the bout's only takedown late in the period on the edge of the circle to give JHU an insurmountable 23-14 lead with one bout remaining.

Hopkins Takes Control in the Middle
The match started at 149 and the teams traded wins before the Blue Jays erased a 4-3 deficit with three consecutive victories at 165, 174 and 184 with all three earning bonus points. Freshman
Jake Hoffmann opened the spree with a 17-6 major decision before graduate student
Joe Paul added a 15-5 major of his own at 174. The three-match run was capped by senior
Grant Walnoha, who needed just 95 seconds to pin York's
Joshua Mitchell.
Â
York jumped back into the match with back-to-back bonus point victories of its own at 197 and 285 as
Camden Farrow grabbed a 20-9 win at 197 and
Sam Rodriguez followed with a second-period pin to account for the 17-14 score entering the final three bouts.
Â
Notes of Interest
Walnoha's last seven wins have all come by fall and six of the seven have come in the first period. Lorin's win was the 60
th of his career. Paul ran his record to 18-1 on the year and the victory tonight was the 89
th of his career; he needs one win to become the sixth wrestler in program history to reach the 90-win mark. The victory was the 99
th for
Keith Norris as the head coach at Johns Hopkins.
