Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Garnet Surge Past Bears After Two-Hour Lightning Delay

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Four hours after the opening kickoff, Swarthmore College Men's Soccer left Clothier Field Stadium as the winner of Wednesday night's Centennial Conference game against Ursinus College. The Garnet and Bears were locked up at 1-1 when a two-hour lightning delay with 18:51 left in the first half. Swarthmore returned to the pitch with new life and scored three more times in the first half en route to the 5-1 win.

Trevor Homstad, Francis Eddy Harvey, Ethan Witkowski, Cameron Ricciardi and Rodrigo Hernandez all scored in the rout.

Homstad's left-footed laser in the fifth minute opened the scoring for the Garnet, but Ursinus responded with a goal in the eighth minute.

With 18:51 left to play in the first half, nearby flashes of lightning drove the players back into the locker room and the fans out of the stadium. Two hours passed before the game was allowed to resume.

Just over a minute after returning to the field, Eddy Harvey, who had just subbed into the game, buried a stinger of a shot from the left side to put Swarthmore back in the lead.

Six minutes later, the Garnet scored again and began to run away with the contest. Witkowski caught Ursinus' goalkeeper off his line and took a long shot from far outside the 18 that drifted in over the keeper's reach.

Eddy Harvey located Ricciardi for his first goal since 2016 in the 42nd minute.

The Garnet tacked on one more goal for good measure in the second half when Hernandez completed a falling shot from the right of the box for his first collegiate goal.

Ian Withy-Berry registered a save and a goal allowed in the first half in goal for Swarthmore. Oliver Steinglass returned to the pitch for the first time since Sept. 9 and had a save in a clean 37 minutes in the second half. Christian Alfaro closed out the final eight minutes in net.

Swarthmore, now 6-3 on the year and 2-1 in Centennial Conference play, takes on Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday on the road at 6 p.m.
