Men's Tennis Wins Fifth-Straight, Defeats Wilkes 8-1

KINGSTON, Pa. – The Ursinus men's tennis team earned an 8-1 victory over Wilkes on Friday afternoon in non-conference action.

 

With the win, the Bears earned their fifth-straight win as they improved to 6-2 overall. Meanwhile, the Colonels fell to 4-3 overall.

 

Ursinus started fast by earning three convincing wins in doubles to take the early 3-0 advantage. Sophomores Darby Rogers and Rob Ritchie earned the first win for the Bears at No. 2 doubles by taking down Cole Gibson and Nathanial Rathe, 8-2. Sophomores Lars Jespersen and Will Oberholtzer followed with an 8-4 triumph at No. 1 doubles over John Toussaint and Jacob Bosler before junior Noah Mandel and sophomore Ethan Yu capped the start with an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles over Nick Putney and Connor Frey.

 

Ritchie did not lose a single point in his singles match at the No. 3 spot by winning 6-0, 6-0 over Frey and Oberholtzer easily clinched the match for the Bears by defeating Toussaint 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Rogers bested Rathe 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 4 position and Mandel edged Bosler 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 5 spot. Jespersen suffered the lone loss for the Bears at No. 1 singles as he was defeated by Gibson 7-5, 5-7 (10-5). Yu put the finishing touches on the Ursinus win by defeating Putney 6-4, 4-6, (10-8).

 

The Bears return to action on Sunday, April 3rd as they will travel to face Salisbury in non-conference action at 2 p.m.
