Merlo Lifts Women’s Soccer in Double OT

Junior Hannah Merlo picked a great time to score the first goal of her career, finding the back of the net with 1:22 to go in the second overtime to lift the Muhlenberg women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Ursinus.

With the win, Muhlenberg's fourth straight over Ursinus, the Mules (7-4-1, 2-3-1) have seven points in the conference standings. They sit five points back of their next opponent, Gettysburg, for the fifth and final playoff spot. Directly in front of the Mules are Swarthmore and Franklin & Marshall with nine points.

The game-winning goal was set up by sophomore Cece Peden and junior Mia Mulin. The former played the ball to the top of the box to Mulin, who laid it off to Merlo just to the left of central. Merlo took two touches before shooting.

Mulin had an opportunity to end the game herself early in the second overtime period. The junior fired a high shot from the left side just over a minute into the period that slid through the leaping goalkeeper's hands but did not cross the goal line.

The Mules didn't back down after falling behind 2-1 midway through the second half. Six of the following seven Muhlenberg shots were on target with the other clanking off the crossbar. That seventh shot was the equalizer, as senior Alyssa Rose dispossessed a Bears' player on the right side of the box and beat the keeper to the short side.

Rose's goal, her second of the year, was the second time the Mules proved their resilience. After Ursinus (3-8-2, 0-7) found the back of the net in the first minute, senior Karolyn Kawa netted her first goal of the season off a corner kick to tie the game at one.

Muhlenberg, which put 13 shots on target on the night, is unbeaten at home this season with a 5-0-1 record.
