Field Hockey Wins In Overtime
SELINGSGROVE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Field Hockey earned its first win in 2019, edging the Susquehanna University River Hawks 2-1 in overtime.
The Garnet finally scored their first goal of the game with just one minute and 43 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Down 1-0, Swarthmore evened the score on a tally by Samantha Meacock on a penalty stroke. The goal was the first of Meacock's career.
After forcing overtime, Swarthmore caged the game-winner six minutes later. The Garnet earned a corner and got off a shot, but had it turned away. A foul by Susquehanna brought the ball out of the circle for the Garnet. On the restart, it appeared that Swarthmore had turned the ball over, but freshman Andie Tappenden recovered possession and slid a pass to Marion Carr who was all alone at the top of the circle. Carr slapped a shot that scooted right around the Susquehanna keeper's foot and in to secure the sudden victory.
Swarthmore out-shot Susquehanna 21-14 in the contest and led in the penalty corner column 11-8.
Aron Lankford registered the win after recording five saves.
Swarthmore will play its first home game of the year on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
