GETTYSBURG, PA – The Johns Hopkins men's cross-country team became the first team in Centennial Conference history to post a perfect score en route to its first conference title since 2013. In addition, junior
Jared Pangallozzi became the first individual champion in program history.
"I couldn't be more proud and happier for this group of guys," said head coach
Bobby Van Allen. "They have put in all the work and have supported each other like such a tight family in every aspect. We have such great competition within the Centennial Conference but really focused on us working as a tighter pack and progressing through the race. I thought we executed that race plan about as best as we possibly could today. Jared continued his strong season earning a very well deserved conference title while Connor, PJ and Pat might have ran the best races of their career to earn second, third and fourth-place respectively."
After knocking on the door with runner-up finishes in each of the last five years, the Blue Jays knocked the door down in 2019. Hopkins swept the top-five spots, led by Pangallozzi, on the way to the historic victory.
Pangallozzi crossed in 25:04.7 to win over classmate
Connor Delahanty, who crossed in 25:21.6. Senior
PJ Murray (25:29.5) beat out junior
Patrick Dye for third place by just 1.3 seconds (25:30.8). Dye in turn edged senior
Andrew King (25:31.1) by a mere three-hundredths of a second.
The quintet all earned First Team All-Centennial Conference honors, the most in program history. Pangallozzi and King are repeat first team selections.
Junior
Declan Hines grabbed an 11
th place finish as he finished in 25:39.4. Sophomore
Sean Laidlaw followed right behind in 12
th place with a time of 25:42.7 to round out the Blue Jays' scorers. Senior
Vipul Bhat finished in 25:52.4 while classmate
Aditya Joshi placed 17
th in 26:01.3 as Hopkins placed nine runners in the top-20. Hines, Laidlaw and Bhat all earned Second Team All-Centennial Conference honors with their finish.
The race started off as a pretty large pack of Hopkins, Haverford, and Dickinson runners with a few other top individuals from other teams. By the halfway point, JHU had started separating itself from the packs but with 1000m to go it had to really work to hold off late charges from Samuel Sheldon (Gettysburg) and Bryce Descavish (Dickinson). King and Dye fought hard to ensure Hopkins' sweep of the top five spots and the perfect score.
With the women also winning the Centennial Conference Championships, Johns Hopkins earned its second ever sweep of the Centennial Conference Championships.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, November 16 at the NCAA Mideast Regional in Bethlehem, PA. The race is slated for an 11:00 am start.
