Johns Hopkins Rolls Past McDaniel, 7-0

Birk Leads Blue Jays with Two Goals, One Assist

The Basics
• Score: #17 Johns Hopkins-7, McDaniel-0
• Records: JHU (11-1, 6-0 CC) • MC (2-10, 1-6 CC)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Homewood Field
• The Short Story: The 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey game exploded for five second-half goals in a 7-0 win over visiting McDaniel Wednesday night.

How it Happened
• Freshman Abby Birk got the scoring going midway through the first half. Birk inserted a penalty corner to junior Katie McErlean at the top of the circle. She fired a shot on the Green Terror cage and Birk redirected it at the left post at 19:01. Eight minutes later, sophomore Val Henderson put back her own rebound to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead.
• The offense then erupted for five goals in a 26-minute span in the second half to put the game away. Sixty-six seconds in, freshman Alyse Tran tipped-in a crossing pass from McErlean at the left post to make it a 3-0 game. Tran then sent a long ball into the circle and it was deflected by a pair of Green Terror defenders. Freshman Maddie Brown-Scherer pounced on the loose ball and touched a soft pass to classmate Izzy Thompson, who banged home her team-leading eighth goal of the season at 43:03.
• Just 86 seconds later, Birk carried the ball into the circle and then passed to Brown-Scherer, who scored on a one-timer from seven yards out. After handing out a pair of assists, it was McErlean getting in the goal column. Sophomore Danika Berman inserted a Hopkins corner, sending the ball up top to McErlean, who ripped a low shot to the far post at 55:56.
• Birk closed out the scoring with 7:45 to play as the Blue Jays converted once again on a corner. Freshman Sarah Matyas ripped a shot from the near side off the corner and Birk was there at the post to tip past Terror goalie Paige Ford.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 32-11-2 all-time against McDaniel and has won two straight and 13 of the last 14 in the series. The Blue Jays' seven goals are the most they have ever scored against the Green Terror.
• The seven goals are the most by Hopkins since a 7-0 win over Bryn Mawr on September 16, 2017.
• Hopkins scored five or more goals in back-to-back games for the first time since October 2011. JHU beat Dickinson, 5-1, and then followed with an 8-0 win over Bryn Mawr three days later.

Inside the Box Score
• Birk's five points and two goals are a career high, while McErlean tied her high with two assists. Brown-Scherer also notched a career-high with three points (1g, 1a).
• Junior Jodie Baris (60:25 minutes) and freshman Kaitlin Hall (9:35) combined to post the shutout in the cage. Neither was forced to make a save in the win. Ford finished with 16 saves for the Green Terror while getting defensive saves from Madison Downey and Emily Farrell.
• Hopkins outshot McDaniel, 43-0, and had a 16-1 advantage in corners. This is the second time this season that the Blue Jays have held an opponent without a shot this season (Washington College, September 22).

Up Next
• Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 13 as the Blue Jays travel to Swarthmore, PA to take on the Garnet. The Centennial Conference contest is slated for a Noon start at Clothier Field Stadium.
