Marchesano Finishes 3rd as Men's Wrestling Places 10th at New Standard Invitational

BRACKETS
YORK, Pa. – Senior Shawn Marchesano earned a third-place finish at 165lbs leading the Ursinus College men's wrestling team to a 10th place finish at the New Standard Invitational on Saturday.

The two-day tournament hosted by York College featured 14 teams including five teams ranked within the top 25 of the National Wrestling Coaches Association rankings.

"We had some very good performances this weekend and we saw a lot of things that we need to work on," Director of Wrestling Joe Jamison said. "This is one of the toughest tournaments in the country, and we continue to test our limits by having the toughest schedule possible. Shawn Marchesano continues to impress and it was great to see Wes Tosto come back from injury and wrestle as well as he did in his season debut."

Marchesano was incredible all weekend finishing with a 6-1 record including five pins in route to his third consecutive top-three finish of the season. He opened on Friday with back-to-back victories by fall over Apprentice's Ethan Baker and Brockport's Matt Kline to advance to the quarterfinals. After falling in the quarterfinals, Marchesano bounced back in the consolation bracket collecting two more victories by pinfall over Steven's James Snyder and Washington and Lee's Harrison Kelly. Marchesano picked up a 11-5 decision over TCNJ's Nick Sacco in the consolation semifinals and won the third-place bout via a pin over Patrick Wisneiwski of Johnson and Wales.

At 125lbs, senior Terry Adams went 2-2 and nearly advanced to the consolation semifinals. In his opening match on Friday, Adams earned a fall over Steven's Vincent Principle at the 2:51 mark of the first period. In the round of 16, in a key match Adams was defeated by No.1 ranked wrestler at 125lbs in the Mideast region TCNJ's Ryan Rosenthal in overtime. Adams would bounce back in the consolations with a 19-5 major decision over Averett's Daniel Porter to advance to the consolation of 4. In a rematch of last year's Centennial Conference Championship, Adams fell to Washington and Lee's Riley Parker by decision 5-3.

Wesley Tosto had an impressive debut in his first action of his sophomore season finishing with a 3-2 record at 141lbs. He opened on Friday with a first period fall over NEC's Griffin Murray at the 2:12 mark and earned two more victories in the consolations advancing into the round of eight. In the consolations he defeated teammate Romeo Rodriguez in a close 8-6 match and earned a 11-8 decision over Waynesburg's Harley Constable in the ensuing bout.

Junior Dante Monaco battled throughout the tournament almost medaling after reaching the consolation quarterfinals at 149lbs. Monaco dropped his opening match but went on to win three consecutive matches to improve his season record to 7-4. He earned his first victory with a 16-8 major decision over USMMA's Jacob Bryan and followed up with a 7-0 decision over Waynesburg's Seth Evans. In his next match, Monaco was leading 7-4 over Stevens' Pasquale Vizzoni before advancing by medical forfeit.

In his season debut at 285lbs, senior Jake Ahmad went 2-2 earning back-to-back victories in the consolations as he defeated York's Brock Hofler by an 8-3 decision and pinned Averett's Will Longhurst at the 5:00 mark of the second period.
