Kishton joins 1000 kill club; Blue Jays stay unbeaten

Blue Jays sweep Garnet, #25 Susquehanna

The Basics – Match 2
• Score: #9 Johns Hopkins – 3 • #25 Susquehanna – 0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-22)
• Records: #9 Johns Hopkins (23-0, 6-0 Centennial) • #25 Susquehanna – (23-4, 4-0 Landmark)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Goldfarb Gymnasium
• The Short Story: Senior Louisa Kishton became the seventh Blue Jay in program history to eclipse the 1,000 career-kill mark as the ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins volleyball team knocked off 25th-ranked Susquehanna for the second time this season, extending its winning streak to 23-straight.

How it Happened

SET ONE
• Kishton entered the latter match of Saturday's double-header sitting on 999 career kills. It took 15 points into the opening set for the senior to pick up that 1,000th kill, as the teams stopped to acknowledge the milestone. Kishton previously eclipsed the 1,000 career-dig mark earlier in the season.
• A Rosina Esposito attacking error extended the Blue Jay lead to 13-9, but a 5-0 River Hawk run would give Susquehanna its first lead of the opening frame at 14-13.
• The River Hawks maintained that advantage until Hopkins reversed the tables and went on a 5-0 run of its own to retake a 21-17 lead.
• Simone Bliss closed out the opening set, 25-21, with her fourth kill of the set.

SET TWO
• A back-and-forth second set opened with neither team winning more than two consecutive points until a Natalie Aston service error sparked a 5-0 Susquehanna run that put the River Hawks ahead 14-11.
• Kishton stepped to serve with the set tied 17-17. A River Hawk error gave the Jays an 18-17 lead and then sophomore Lauren Anthony tallied three straight kills to ultimately extend the lead to 22-17. Anthony finished the match with an impressive seven kills and a pair of blocks while hitting a team-high .583 from the floor.
• The final three points of the set for Hopkins came on attacking errors from Susquehanna. Neither team hit relatively well in the second set, but it was nine errors by SU that ultimately proved to be the difference.

SET THREE
• Hopkins would jump out to a 9-4 advantage thanks in part to three more kills from Anthony. Four unanswered from Susquehanna would cut the lead to 9-8, and the River Hawks would eventually even the set at 10-10.
• SU took its first lead at 16-15 following a Bliss attacking error, but as they continue to do all season, the Jays responded. Seven unanswered flipped the scoreboard in Hopkins' favor and put the Blue Jays in front 22-16. Hannah Korslund had a pair of crucial kills over the scoring spree to spark the run.
• The lead would shrink to 24-22, but Anthony and Eleni Panagopoulos teamed up for a match-clinching block on an attack from Esposito.

Inside the Box Score
• Kishton became the seventh player in program history to reach 1000 kills in a career. She also is just one of four players in Hopkins volleyball history to notch 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career.
• Bliss will look to join Kishton in the 1,000 club as her team-high 12 kills pushed her career total to 991.

What it Means
• The win is Hopkins' fifth in 11 all-time meetings between the two programs. It was also the fourth win over a ranked opponent this year for the Jays.
• The Blue Jays are now the only remaining unbeaten team in Division III after Tufts dropped its first match of the season to Babson earlier Saturday afternoon.

The Basics – Match 1
• Score: #9 Johns Hopkins – 3 • Swarthmore – 0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-12)
• Records: #9 Johns Hopkins (22-0, 6-0 Centennial) • Swarthmore – (12-9, 3-3 Centennial)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Goldfarb Gymnasium
• The Short Story: Hopkins opened its Saturday doubleheader by cruising to straight-set victory over longtime conference rival, Swarthmore.

How it Happened

SET ONE
• Hopkins appeared to come out a tad slow to start, coming off Thursday night's big win over Stevenson. The Blue Jays threw away four points on errors to give Swarthmore an early 7-5 advantage.
• The Jays would slowly claw their way back. A Simone Bliss kill put JHU inb front 11-10, and then the junior followed with an ace on the next play.
• Back-to-back errors from the Garnet extended the lead to 20-16, and Bliss would tack on another kill to push it to 21-16, the largest lead of the set to that point.
• Hannah Korslund added a kill to give Hopkins set point at 24-17, and an attacking error from Mehra den Braven closed out set one for the undefeated Blue Jays.

SET TWO
• It was Swarthmore once again opening strong to kick off the second set, this time racing out to a 9-3 lead following an Alexa Bartlett kill. The five-point deficit would be the largest that Hopkins would face all afternoon.
• Louisa Kishton tallied back-to-back kills to cut the Garnet lead to 15-12. Nicole Hada then added an ace to trim the lead to two before consecutive kills from Lauren Anthony and Kishton closed out a 5-0 run for the Jays and evened the set back up at 15-15.
• Swarthmore scored to retake a 16-15 advantage, but four more unanswered from JHU would give the Blue Jays the lead for good in the second set.
• Sophomore Eleni Panagopoulos found the perfect time for her lone kill of the second set, pounding home a feed from Natalie Aston on set point to give Hopkins a two set advantage.

SET THREE
• The 25-12 score for the third three was not indicative of how competitive the final frame was in reality. In fact, Swarthmore led initially 6-3, and the score was tied at 10-10 before Hopkins exploded for 15 of the final 17 points.
• Three Aston aces helped spark a 7-0 run that would take what was a 10-10 tie and turn into a 17-10 Blue Jay lead. Bliss also added a pair of kills during the scoring spree.
• After consecutive Garnet points, a Panagopoulos kill quickly halted any momentum Swarthmore hoped to recover. Bliss then stepped to serve and Hopkins strung together eight straight points to finish off the match, capped off by back-to-back kills from Hannah Korslund.

What it Means
• The win is the third straight for Hopkins over the Garnet and the Blue Jays now lead the overall series 31-7.
• Bliss' team-high 19 kills was the junior's highest kill total in a three-set match in her career.

Up Next
•
Hopkins will head back on the road for three straight road matches beginning first with McDaniel on Wednesday night in Westminster. The Blue Jays will return to Goldfarb for the season finale on November 2 against Franklin & Marshall.
