READING, Pa. – Swarthmore College Women's Basketball fell in the season opener to Alvernia University, 55-45, on Monday evening.
The Garnet opened the scoring on a three-pointer by
Isabelle Ewart.
Kendall Tribus grabbed a defensive rebound before finding Ewart for the opening basketball of the 2019-20 campaign. Ewart and Tribus would reconnect minutes later to give Swarthmore a 9-5 advantage.
Tribus added a jumper inside the paint as the Garnet ended the first quarter with a 18-12. Swarthmore struggled to get the offense moving in the second quarter, and trailed at half 29-23.
Dana Bandurick netted the first basket in the second half, and cut the deficit to four points.
The freshman led the Garnet as she recorded a double-double in her first collegiate game. She grabbed five offensive boards and five defensive rebounds in addition to 12 points and four assist. Bandurick added a team-high three steals and one block.
Tribus recorded 12 boards and seven points, while
Karinna Papke scored ten points. Ewart finished the game with eight points, two steals and one rebound in 17 minutes of action.
The Garnet netted 11 second chance points off of 14 offensive rebounds.
The Garnet fall to 0-1 and will return to the court on Saturday for the home opener against Penn State Harrisburg. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
