GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Powered by a program record five individual championships, the Gettysburg College wrestling team won its second consecutive team tournament title at its own invitational Saturday inside Bream Gym.
Gettysburg racked up 114 points to beat out Wilkes University, which finished with 107.5 points. The Bullets won their first tournament title in over four decades last weekend at Messiah College and Saturday's title marked the first time the program had captured two in a single season.
Three Gettysburg grapplers earned championships for the second weekend in a row and remained unbeaten on the year. Junior
Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) picked up his second title at 149 pounds with four dominant wins. Senior
Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) won his fourth career title, while classmate
Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) rounded out the repeating trio with his ninth career crown at heavyweight.
The two first-time winners were freshman
Ray Martin (Downingtown, Pa./West Chester Henderson at 157 and senior
Dan Ebert (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) at 184.
The five individual champions topped the previous program record tied by the team last weekend at Messiah.
Devlin, the reigning Centennial Conference Wrestler of the Week, did not surrender a single point in three of his four bouts. He opened with a 9-0 major decision and picked up an 11-6 victory over Jesse Walker from Penn College. The junior cruised through the semifinals with a 7-0 win before taking down teammate
Phil Angelo (Summit, N.J./Summit) 6-0 in the championship match.
Martin picked up his first collegiate crown at the next weight class. After a pair of first-period pins, the Gettysburg first-year laid down a 6-1 win over Michael Brown from Wilkes. Martin capped the day with a 3-2 win over Mike Galton from Alfred State University.
Kowalski, who entered the weekend ranked 10th at 165 pounds, sped his way into the 174 finals with two first-period pins and a 17-1 technical fall. He finished off his title run with a 7-4 win over Ashton Gyenizs from Wilkes.
After just missing his first career title with a runner-up showing last weekend, Ebert secured the crown at 184 pounds Saturday. He pinned his first foe in 1:25 and grinded out a 4-2 win over Tristan Almeter from Alfred State in the semifinals. Ebert ran through his championship opponent, posting an 18-0 technical fall against Ronald Wuest from McDaniel College.
Triandafilou continued his rise up Gettysburg's all-time wins list with four more victories Saturday. He cruised through his first two foes with a technical fall (18-2) and major decision (8-0). A pair of Penn heavyweights tested the senior in the final two contests, but Triandafilou pushed through for a pair of 2-1 wins over Jonathan Pineda and Dylan Otis. He now sits fifth in program history with 95 career wins.
Six more Gettysburg wrestlers reached placement matches. Senior
Noah Malamut (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep) out-scored his first two foes 29-5 before bowing out by medical forfeit in the finals at 133 pounds. One week from placing fourth at Messiah, Angelo improved his finish Saturday with three victories before falling in the 149 finals to Devlin.
Junior
Tristan Chen (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) was one of four Bullets to reach the consolation finals. Chen won a pair of high-scoring decisions to open his day at 165 pounds and added a 7-6 decision in his first bout in the wrestleback. He earned the highest finish of his career with a medical forfeit over teammate
Marc Larson (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills). Larson won a pair of matches to reach the third-place bout.
Freshman
Eric Chambers (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and junior
Traken Sutton (Wethersfield, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) finished fourth at 141 and 149, respectively. Chambers picked up four wins, including a pair of pins, before dropping the consolation finale by medical forfeit. Sutton posted two victories to join Devlin and Angelo in the semis at 149, but Angelo came out on top in the battle of Bullets with a 3-2 overtime decision. Sutton bounced back for a 9-6 win in the consolation semifinal and fell in the third-place match 4-0 to Joshua Brown from Wilkes.
Gettysburg returns to action at the McDaniel Duals next Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
