Game Notes

  • F&M set a new team record with 26 home runs this season - setting the mark with eight games remaining. The previous high water mark was 24 in 2009.

  • To say Jakob Hoffman is mashing at the plate would be putting it lightly. The sophomore has hit now safely in nine straight games and 14 of 15 entering Week 8.

          • Over a four-game stretch last week, Hoffman went 12-17 at the dish, with seven runs, seven RBI, four home runs, and three doubles. He now ranks second in the Centennial in home runs with seven, which also ranks second all-time in a season for F&M behind Dennis Dowd in 1982.

  • Bobby Falese now sits just seven RBI behind the Diplomats' all-time leader for a season, currently in a tie for fifth with 42 RBI. Falese also is tied for seventh with his 13 two-baggers - matching nine other Diplomats. The sophomore is just five doubles behind Scott Haft's 18 in 2004.

  • Spencer Berson had his nine-game hitting streak snapped at Dickinson on April 12, but continued his strong stretch of play with three more games with a base-knock following the hitless contest. Even with the hitless contest, the sophomore outfielder has reached base in 15 consecutive - reaching via base on balls during two games. It's been a month to the date (3/19) since Berson hasn't reached base in a game.

          • During that nine game hitting streak, Berson hit .394 with nine RBI. Including the hitless game, Berson is hitting .408 with four homers and 16 RBI over his last 13 contests.

          • Berson's three sacrifice flies against Dickinson ranks tops in Diplomat history, beating out the previous record of two - last tied in 2019 by Don DiLoreto.

  • F&M's six stolen bases against Dickinson on Friday ranks fourth in school history. AJ Desautels swiped two, Drew Butera had one, and Tommy Denlinger stole three bags in the win. It's the best effort since the 2005 and 2006 squads were absolute thieves on the basepaths - combining for the top six marks in F&M history.

          • Denlinger's trio of steals ranks him in a tie for third all-time with five other Diplomats, and the best mark since Alex Miller swiped three on April 7, 2019 at Muhlenberg.

  • AJ Desautels didn't have a banner day against Ursinus - wearing the golden sombrero with four strikeouts, and committing the first multi-strikeout day of his young career. Since then, the first-year infielder has worked six walks against three strikeouts, including a three-walk effort against Johns Hopkins on Saturday.

          • Desautels' three walks tie a whole slew of players for tops in F&M history - most recently by J.J. Freeman and Justin Cavegn in the same game on March 10, 2020 against Elizabethtown.

  • Charlie Wright polished off F&M's game against Dickinson with seven innings of relief. Our records don't indicate the longest relief appearance by a Diplomat, but we can imagine it ranks near the top of our imaginary list.

          • Wright is now third on the staff in innings pitched (32.1), despite only starting three contests. The senior trails team-leader Greg Nieskens (36.2) and Kyle Roche (35.0) - with all three making eight appearances. Nieskens has started six, while Roche has taken the bump first in all eight.

  • F&M's five homers against Ursinus once again tied a school record in our incomplete record books on Monday - a mark originally set by the 2013 squad against Johns Hopkins. Then the Diplomats went ahead and did it again against Johns Hopkins on Saturday, as four different F&M players went yard.

  • Kyle Roche had an interesting stat line against Johns Hopkins - not only finishing one strikeout shy of tying a career high (11), but also allowing 11 Blue Jay hits. In doing so, he became the second Diplomat pitcher ever to allow double-digit hits while punching out 10+ - matching Jonathan Cole's ten hit, ten strikeout day on Apr. 7, 2019 at Muhlenberg.

  • Dan Galef continues his ridiculous stretch of tossing, now sitting at 14 consecutive innings of shutout baseball. The first-year hasn't allowed a run since March 13 - allowing just three hits while punching out 17. Two of those hits came in his spot start at Dickinson on Tuesday, where he went five scoreless innings against the Red Devils.

  • Stephen Turzai's start against Dickinson was the first of his career after 21 relief appearances for the Diplomats - 13 coming this season.

  • Bijan Anvar has worked his way into regular appearances out of the bullpen, throwing three times in a week. The first-year righty only allowed one run and three hits across five innings of work on April 9, 12, and 16.

  • F&M's win over Dickinson at Clipper Magazine Stadium marks the second time the team has won at a professional ballpark in recent memory. The team previously won this year at Roanoke, who calls Lewis Gale Field at Salem Memorial Ballpark its home base. Previous to this year, the team was 0-4 including stints at Clipper, PNC Field (Moosic, Pa.), and the former Campbell's Field (Camden, N.J.).

  • F&M's undefeated start in CC play was thwarted by Johns Hopkins this weekend, starting a difficult stretch for the Diplomats.

          • The friendly schedule to start had the Diplomats facing the bottom four teams in the conference, who have combined for a 9-29 record in CC play.

          • Including this past weekend's doubleheader against Hopkins, F&M now faces the five best teams remaining in the CC to finish off the season. Including the Blue Jays, those teams tout a combined record of 31-17 in CC play.
