Hornets Sting Bullets in Season Opener

Gettysburg drops debut 4-1

GETTYSBURG, Pa.  – Shenandoah University put all but two of its 15 shot attempts on goal and came away with four conversions to top host Gettysburg College 4-1 in non-conference field hockey action at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium

Game Summary
First Quarter: Shenandoah tested the cage early with a shot on goal in the opening minute. Caputo stopped that attempt, but the Hornets turned in the first score of 2019 10 minutes later with Jessica Donovan hitting the back of the cage. Sophomore Lauren Beccaria (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) attempted to score a minute later only to be stopped cold by Morande.
Second Quarter: The visitors stole in front 2-0 on a shot by Jones. Just 22 seconds later, Vadinsky tallied her first collegiate goal following a pass from Bertrando. Hayes added a penalty stroke goal in the 24th minute to pad the Hornets' lead, while Caputo tallied five saves in the final 10 minutes of the first half.
Third Quarter: Caputo stopped the only shot on goal by either team in the 41st minute.
Fourth Quarter: Senior Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) was stonewalled by Morande 12 seconds into the period. Shenandoah made it a three-goal lead on a shot be Megan Stevens in the 53rd minute. Gettysburg had three shots on goal stopped in front of the cage in the final six minutes of play.
 
Where the Series Stands Now
Shenandoah beat Gettysburg in the season opener for the second consecutive season and has won two of the three meetings all-time with the Bullets.
 
Looking Ahead
Gettysburg hits the road for a non-conference affair at Washington and Lee University on Sunday beginning at noon.
