Blue Jays Finish First at Rowan Inter-Regional Border Battle

Hopkins defeated top-teams in RPI, SUNY Geneseo and Carnegie Mellon

Meet Information
• Race: Rowan Inter-Regional Border Battle
• Location: Logan Township, NJ • Gloucester County Dream Park
• Date: Saturday, October 13
• The Short Story: The No. 10 Johns Hopkins men's cross country team put together an impressive performance as the Blue Jays defeated all of the competition, finishing first overall at the Rowan Inter-Regional Border Battle. JHU defeated nationally ranked teams RPI (2nd), Carnegie Mellon (7th) and SUNY Geneseo (13th). RPI is the highest ranked opponent Hopkins has defeated.

Race Highlights
• With five nationally ranked teams in the race, including second-ranked RPI with its 1-2 punch of Sean and Grant O'Conner, the Blue Jays had to run an excellent race and execute their plan perfectly, which they did.
• The race was led by the O'Conners through the first mile with a pack of Blue Jays right behind them with a first mile time of 4:45-4:58. The race made a lot of moves early and by the 5k mark there was a 20-second gap between the top-50 compared to just a few seconds at the mile mark.
Andrew King and Conner Delahanty began to move up considerably as JHU took a 10-point lead over SUNY Geneseo by the 5k mark and built a larger lead between them and RPI and Carnegie Mellon. King eventually finished in sixth, just 13 seconds behind winner Sean O'Conner.
Alex Doran and Jared Pangallozzi held strong in the second part of the race to finish 10th and 14th respectively, while Delahanty ran one of the best races of his JHU career finishing as the 4th JHU runner and 18th overall.
• Johns Hopkins needed another runner to step-up and seal the deal, and that runner was senior captain Scott Pourschalchi who got past 18 runners in the final 3k to finish 32nd and seal the Blue Jays win.
• JHU finished with an average time of 25:24 with a 28-second gap between its top finishers. Vipul Bhat and Ollie Hickson added depth with times under 25:50 while Kevin Peters and Panth Patel also broke the 26:00-mark. Freshman Sean Laidlaw narrowly missed the same feat with a time of 26:00 to round out the top-10.

Head Coach Bobby Van Allen
• "This was certainly one of our best performances we have had. We still have a lot of work to do to get ready for championships but the progressions are all there. That's something we have stressed as a team from day one and they have stuck to that plan."
• "The 28-second gap is one of our best, but all the guys know we can tighten that even further to really put forth our best performance in the upcoming championships stretch of the season."
