BETHLEHEM, PA – The Johns Hopkins men finished second in the NCAA Mideast Regional on Saturday afternoon, finishing behind Carnegie Mellon.
With a few top runners out, the Blue Jays were still able to place five runners in the top-30, finishing with 76 points. Carnegie Mellon won the Mideast Region, finishing with 55 points.
Centennial Conference Runner of the Year
Jared Pangallozzi finished second at the regional, finishing in 24:40.7, four seconds ahead of Elizabethtown's Samuel Gerstenbacher. All-American Patrick Watson of Stevenson won the Mideast Regional.
"Jared looked great running comfortably to a second-place finish behind Watson. They have both proven to be contenders for the NCAA individual title and will look to have another great battle next weekend," Van Allen said.
Declan Hines grabbed a top-10 finish in his first Mideast Regional as a Blue Jay. Hines ran the course in 25:05.9. After a strong performance at the conference meet,
Conner Delahanty placed 15
th, finishing in 25:19.5.
Patrick Dye finished 21
st while
Vipul Bhat rounded out the Johns Hopkins top-five, finishing 28
th. Dye put up a time of 25:28.7 and Bhat finished in 25:36.8.
Tyler Amos didn't factor into the result, but earned Mideast region honors with his performance as well.
"Despite resting three of our top seven from the Conference Championships, we grabbed second behind a strong team pack that included everyone finishing in the top-40," said Van Allen.
Carnegie Mellon led from the start, holding a 17-point edge over the Blue Jays at the one-mile mark. The lead extended to 22 after 3.9 miles before ultimately earning a 21-point victory over Johns Hopkins.
"I thought we did what was necessary to advance to Louisville. I know we will have to step up again next week to fulfill our team goals, but I'm confident we can do that and look forward to the challenge."
Hopkins will compete next weekend in Louisville, KY at the National meet.
