Women's Tennis Tames Mules

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Only a pair of tough tiebreakers stood between the Ursinus College women's tennis team and its first sweep of the spring, but the Bears were more than satisfied to leave the Lehigh Valley with a 7-2 Centennial Conference victory over Muhlenberg in tow.

Four different players were double winners for Ursinus, which moved to 3-1 on the season and won its sixth consecutive meeting with the Mules. The Bears are tied with Washington College for second place in the league standings.

The Bears claimed two of three on the doubles courts, beginning with an easy 8-1 victory for Brenna Trkula and Avery Samer at No. 2. Caitlin Vinsonhaler and Claire Burke, playing together for the second time, made it two straight wins with an 8-4 result at No. 3.

Bidding for a sweep, Cara Freedman and Maddie Russell were denied by Muhlenberg's Caroline Maglaras and Caroline Armknecht, who pulled out a 7-4 tiebreaker on the top court.

Vinsonhaler (6-2, 6-2 at No. 3), Burke (6-1, 6-2 at No. 5), and Jessica Leach (6-0, 6-1 at No. 6) all logged convincing singles wins to shore up the team victory for the Bears.

Samer had a tough match at No. 4 and edged out Sophia Framm in a pair of 7-5 sets, while Trkula secured a tiebreaker to grab a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win at No. 2.

After battling to a tiebreaker on the doubles court, Russell and Maglaras did it again in singles. Like the first round, Maglaras managed to escape with a narrow victory, pulling out a 6-4, 0-6, 10-6 triumph at number one.

The Bears return to the Bailey Courts to host Dickinson on Saturday.
