GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) went 2-for-3 and scored three runs as Gettysburg College held off Lancaster Bible College for a 4-3 non-conference victory at Kirchhoff Field Tuesday evening.
Gettysburg (9-7) scored in its opening at bat for the eighth time this season. Giovinco drew a walk and then scored all the way from first base on a hit-and-run as junior
Ryan LaCoe (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) smacked a double to right-center. The Bullets have out-scored their opponents 26-12 in the opening inning this season.
Giovinco scored each of the game's next two runs as well. After leading off with an infield second in the third, the junior swiped second base before scoring on a single to left field by freshman
Mark Seibert (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep). Giovinco came home on a single through the right side by sophomore
Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Working with a lead for most of his time on the mound, sophomore
Erik Wortmann (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) allowed a lead-off single to start the game, but sophomore
Eric Raio (West Caldwell, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) gunned down the runner attempting to steal second base. Wortmann did not allow another hit and only one runner reached scoring position in the remainder of his four innings of work.
The Chargers scored their first run on a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning, but senior pitcher
Sam Dobbins (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) worked out of the jam with a swinging strikeout and a groundout to shortstop to end the threat.
Lancaster Bible closed the gap to a one with a pair of unearned runs in its final two at bats. With the tying run on first base, freshman
Tyler Carmolingo (Mullica Hill, N.J./Saint Augustine Prep) picked up a pop-up bunt to Raio and back-to-back fly outs to the outfield to close the game and earn his first collegiate save.
Over his last six games, Giovinco has hit .542 (13-for-24) with eight runs scored. Seibert and Murphy each went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Wortmann struck out four and improved to 2-1 this spring.
