CHESTER, Pa.—Playing under the new NCAA game rules of quarters and clock-stopping penalty corners, Swarthmore College Field Hockey fell 1-0 at Widener University in the 2019 season opener on Friday night.
Swarthmore's 2019 opening day starting lineup featured a new goalkeeper, three freshmen and a transfer student. The Garnet posted four shots in the contest, put couldn't get one to land in the back of the cage. Freshman Martina Kampel led the way with a pair of attempts.
Freshman back Grace Twitchell made a defensive save in the second quarter to keep things scoreless in the first half. However, with 52 seconds left in the third quarter, Widener scored the game's only goal.
The Garnet came close to tying things up in the fourth quarter when freshman Callie Cho put a shot on frame that got past the goalkeeper but was stopped by a defender on the line.
Sophomore goalkeeper Aron Lankford made her first start for Swarthmore and recorded five saves. Widener tallied 15 shots in total.
Swarthmore looks to bounce back on Sunday at Arcadia University in a 1 p.m. game.
