The Muhlenberg field hockey team strengthened its Centennial Conference playoff chances with a 1-0 win at Gettysburg.
With two weeks to go in the regular season, the Mules (5-7, 5-2) are in sole possession of fourth place in the CC, behind three nationally ranked teams. They have a two-game lead over the three teams (Washington, Haverford and Gettysburg) tied for fifth with four losses, and they've already beaten two of them.
Senior
Stephi Rydgren scored the lone goal of the game late in the first half off a pass from freshman
Megan Webber (pictured above). It was the fourth goal of the season for Rydgren and the 17th of her career.
For the third time this year, the defense made one goal stand up. The Bullets (6-7, 3-4) took four shots on goal - two saved by junior goalie
Jordan Segrave and two saved by sophomore backs
Morgan Tietz and
Sophie Beeler - in a four-minute stretch midway through the first half. Other than that, the defense allowed only one shot on goal for the entire game.
Muhlenberg has scored at least one goal in 18 straight games dating back to last season. That's the longest stretch since the Mules went 80 games without getting shut out from the start of the program in 1959 through 1970. The 1983 and 1984 teams also combined for an 18-game scoring streak.
