Reyes Grabs 100th Career Win, Jays Split on Day 1 at Virginia Duals

Senior Becomes Second JHU Wrestler to Reach 100-Win Mark

HAMPTON, VA – The Johns Hopkins wrestling team split its two matches on the first day of the 41st Annual Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum on Friday.  The Blue Jays dropped a 25-17 decision in their first match against Liberty before rallying for a 29-19 win over Apprentice in the second match of the day.  In addition to the team results, the Blue Jays saw senior Dominick Reyes reach a milestone as he notched his 100th career win

Against the Flames
The Blue Jays trailed 12-3 after four matches, only to win three straight, including two that earned bonus points, to grab a 17-12 lead before the Flames closed out the 25-17 victory by winning the final three bouts.

Junior Brent Lorin's 4-2 overtime win at 125 was JHU's only win in the first four bouts, but the Blue Jays quickly turned the nine-point deficit into the 17-12 lead on the strength of a 7-1 win at 157 by Chris Roybal, a second-period pin for Reyes at 165 and a 19-4 technical fall victory for senior Joe Paul at 174.

The Flames took a 22-17 lead with a major decision at 184 and a first-period pin at 197 before Jefferey Allen secured the victory with a 6-1 win over Hank Behaeghel at 285.

Against the Builders
The Blue Jays rallied from an early 13-point deficit to grab the 29-19 victory over the Builders.  After Apprentice grabbed wins by fall, major decision and decision to open the match, the Blue Jays won six straight bouts to grab an insurmountable 29-13 lead with one bout remaining.

Senior Jack Albin jump-started the six-match run with an 8-6 win that saw him score a reversal and four-point near-fall to open the third period.  Roybal followed with the first pin of his career, Reyes won by forfeit and Paul grabbed his second technical fall victory of the day to make it 20-13 heading to the match at 184.

Freshman Jon Libby turned an 8-3 deficit at the end of the first period into 11-8 lead midway through the third period as he used a four-point near fall in the second period and a reversal and two back points in the third to go up 11-8 and went on to win 12-10 at 184.  Classmate Will Shiber then locked up the win with a 99-second pin of Caleb Hartung at 197 that gave the Blue Jays the 29-13 lead.  Apprentice grabbed a win by forfeit at 285 to close out the match.

Reyes Reaches 100 Career Wins
With his two wins on the day, Reyes became just the second wrestler in school history to reach 100 career wins.  With a career record of 100-24, he joins Paul Bewak (135 wins from 2012-15) as the only Hopkins wrestlers to amass 100 career victories.

More Reyes
In addition to becoming just the second wrestler in school history to reach the 100-win mark, Reyes extended his school-record winning streak to 38 matches dating back to 2019.   With his first-period pin of Liberty's David Over, he also tied the Johns Hopkins record for career pins with 35; he is now tied with Eric Fishel (2004-08) atop the career pins list at Hopkins.

Notes of Interest
Paul's two technical falls give him six on the year; that is already just two shy of the JHU single-season record.  Roybal returned to the lineup for the first time since November 20 and picked up the two wins to improve to 8-4 on the year.

What's Next
The Blue Jays will continue action on Saturday in the consolation bracket with a match at 4 pm against the loser of the semifinal match between top-seeded Kutztown and fourth-seeded Davis & Elkins; both of those teams compete at the Division II level.
