Catholic Strikes Late to Top Gettysburg

Cardinals turn in game-winner with two minutes remaining

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – Catholic University's Jess Waite scored with two minutes remaining on the clock to spoil an 11-save effort by senior goalie Jillian Caputo (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) and send the host Cardinals past the Bullets 3-2 in non-conference field hockey action Wednesday evening.

Game Summary
First Quarter: Catholic controlled the game flow and out-shot Gettysburg 8-0 in the opening period. Caputo posted five saves, but the Cardinals managed the first goal by Shallow in the 11th minute.
Second Quarter: The Bullets' first shot of the contest was on target as Beccaria slipped the ball into the cage at 16:54. Caputo came up with another save later in the frame, but the rebound was tapped in by Shallow to put the hosts back in front 2-1.
Third Quarter: Gettysburg converted out of a penalty corner late in the third period. Senior Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) put a shot on goal that was stopped by McGroary, but in the ensuing scrum Cavicchio directed the ball to Scheetz who tipped it into the goal to tie the game.
Fourth Quarter: The Bullets maintained the tie despite a barrage of shots by the Cardinals. Caputo posted five of her 11 saves in the frame. With about two minutes remaining, Catholic finally broke through with Waite converting the game-winner.
 
Where the Series Stands Now
Catholic improved its record to 12-10 against Gettysburg. Three of the last four match ups between the two teams has been decided by one goal.
