Game Recap: Football |

Football Makes History with Win at McDaniel

The sixth-ranked Muhlenberg football team combined a strong defensive effort with plenty of offense to win at McDaniel, 49-7, and head into next week's showdown with Johns Hopkins undefeated.

The Mules (7-0, 6-0) outgained the Green Terror by a 550-153 margin in a game that featured some historic accomplishments:

• The offense scored at least 40 points for the fourth consecutive game, only the second time that has happened in team history.

• The defense held an opponent to single digits for the fourth consecutive road game, a feat that hadn't happened since 1939.

• Senior Ryan Curtiss caught two passes for 33 yards to break the Centennial Conference record for career receiving yards by a tight end (1,542).

• The final touchdown of the game came on a 93-yard pass from freshman Ethan Brader to senior Ryan Dimmick, the second-longest pass play ever at Muhlenberg. The only longer one was a 95-yard pass from Dan Deighan to Isaiah Vaughn at Franklin & Marshall in 2011.

Junior Michael Hnatkowsky finished 18-of-30 for 273 yards and three touchdowns, two of which went to senior Max Kirin, who became only the second Mule receiver with more than 25 career touchdown catches.

Junior James Diggs scored two touchdowns on the ground, and senior Nick DeLucas (pictured above) rushed for a career-high 75 yards and a 24-yard touchdown.

Of the 153 yards allowed by the defense, 85 came on one fluke play when senior safety Joseph O'Hagan batted down an overthrown pass, right into the hands of a receiver, who scored the lone touchdown of the game for McDaniel (3-4, 2-4).

The Mules allowed only five first downs and 28 yards on 33 rushes while recording six sacks. Junior Spencer Kirin had two of the sacks, forcing a fumble with one, and senior Frankie Feaster finished with 3½ tackles for loss, 1½ sacks, a pass breakup and a blocked punt.

Feaster's third blocked punt of the season ended the first possession of the game, and Muhlenberg needed only five plays to capitalize, with Diggs running in from 8 yards out just 2:47 into the game.

The first of Kirin's two touchdown catches, from 20 yards, capped the Mules' next drive and made it 14-0 midway through the first quarter.

Muhlenberg did not send out its punting unit until early in the second quarter, and sophomore Kevin Olifiers' boot was downed at the 2-yard line, setting up a 1-yard scoring run by Diggs after the defense forced a three-and-out.

Another punt later in the quarter, downed at the 5, set up the Mules with a short field again, and seven plays later Hnatkowsky hit Kirin from 7 yards out.

Hnatkowsky's third TD pass, a 7-yard strike to junior Mitch Daniel, made it 42-7 in the third quarter.

The third career interception by junior Daymon Fleming ended a McDaniel scoring threat midway through the fourth quarter. On the next play, Brader threw long to Dimmick, who caught the ball near midfield and outraced a Green Terror defensive back to the end zone to complete the 93-yard touchdown.

Muhlenberg was 11-of-16 on third down, converting seven of its first nine attempts on third-and-7 or longer.
